Prevention Strategies/
Mitigating Debt defaults

Debt defaults are rarely sudden and many of its triggers can be anticipated and precluded if a robust prevention plan is in place. There are multiple tools available to the stakeholders to detect signals and indicators early on and to take necessary action so as to remedy them. There also exist best practices that can decrease the risks of debt defaults, enhance prudence on behalf of lenders and financial discipline, and increase transparency and good corporate governance by corporates. Another key factor is the critical need for motivation within the lender’s organization to work closely with risk managers, anticipate distressed debt and send them to workout departments early on.

Systemic Issues

In order to encourage a culture of rescuing  financially distressed corporates rather than jumping to liquidation and receiverships, certain systemic issues need to be resolved. First and foremost, there is a need of elaborate formal insolvency laws in the region that facilitate the smooth execution of  financial workouts. Secondly, it is crucial to remove the stigma attached to defaulting on one’s debts (particularly in the region) that discourages admitting indebtedness. Thirdly, prosecution as a result of bounced cheques tends to impede the effectiveness of debt restructuring. Lastly, social connections between the key stakeholders involved in debt recovery makes the procedure challenging.

Debt Restructuring
and Value Creation

Debt restructuring play a key role in economic recovery by helping corporates become  financially sustainable in trouble times. However, this tool is not reserved for rainy days only. It can be profoundly useful in maximizing  financial value for organizations by reorganizing their debt to decrease interest payments and tax reductions by altering sources of debt. Furthermore, it can help in bolstering the  financial standing of an organization by diversifying its debt portfolio.
